Move over Cheerios, there is a new breakfast in town.
Recently the Jubilant household was asked to try out Kellogg's Eggo Bake Shop Twists. I am not sure who was more eager for a change in our breakfast routine, me or the chickadees. So we enthusiastically agreed. We chose the strawberry flavor mainly because there was a gaping hole on the shelf where the apple flavor must have been. We'll keep our eyes open for the apple flavor - my chickadees are particularly fond of apples.
Because I am familiar with the quality of Eggo products, I had high expectations and these twists did not disappoint. With a quick zap in the microwave (25 seconds for each pastry), my kitchen smelled like a bakery. I actually did the "mmmmmm" thing out loud when I took the first bite. The outside of the pastry was soft and warm. The fruit filling was a bit warmer and tasted like preserves. These twists go way beyond your run of the mill pop up toaster pastry. Not even in the same ballpark. The chickadees, for once, did not rush through breakfast, but took their time and really enjoyed their new treat.
The portion size is a good one especially for my two youngest (four and five years old), but my seven year old could have easily eaten two or three, if that had been an option for him. Serve the pastry with a banana and a glass of milk and you are in business.
I kept thinking that this would be ideal when we have to run out the door and don't have but a minute for breakfast. And because there was little mess factor (no drips!), I wouldn't have a heart attack at the thought of them eating it in the mommymobile. Not that there aren't plenty of cereal bits, french fry ends and half eaten crackers to feed a small nation as it is.

Now, you'll have to excuse me while I go snag the last strawberry twist while my chickadees are distracted.
