The Royal Treatment

My youngest son, Mark, and I were having our date and . . . do I need to explain that? Allow me . . . Recently, The Calm One and I decided that our children weren't getting enough one-on-one time. We rectified that by taking them out on dates. Not only did it help solve our quality time issues, but it was a good way to prepare them for how they should treat a date - or in our daughter's case, how she should be treated on a date.

But, I digress . . .

Mark and I were on our date. I was in a lovely green blouse and he was wearing his newly acquired Burger King crown. Snazzy. I was finished with my cone, watching his cone drip and listening to him sing his (rather lengthy) repertoire of cartoon theme songs. In case you were wondering, he probably does watch too much tv -- don't judge me, 'K? I was valiantly controlling the urge to constantly remind him, "Keep licking!"

He was being extremely cute and extremely, well, three. I suddenly realized that there probably won't be many more occasions where he'll be so uninhibited as to belt out the various virtues of Higgly Town Heroes.

Or wear a pointy paper hat in public.

I leaned over the sticky Formica table and told him, "You are so cute. I am glad to spend time with just you. I love you, Little Man."

He leaned in, mimicking my posture, and with a wide smile that bespoke of many years of orneriness to come, giggled, "You may now bow to your Majesty!"

I guess it's time to confess to The Calm One that I've been dating royalty.
